Nizi taps non-ferrous raw materials trading in Africa, team expands quickly

Luxembourg-based metal trader Nizi International has expanded its metals raw materials business further by recruiting another new member to oversee its African affairs.

Richard Hawken, formerly of South Vaal Trading, has joined Nizi to oversee the non-ferrous metals, ores and concentrates business in sub-Saharan Africa, the company chief executive officer Ulf Berg said in an emailed statement to Fast markets on Thursday October 4.

In his prior job, Hawken used to secure metals offtake agreements in the South African mining industry, which has been embattled by a proposed change to the mining charter in recent years.

This is already the fourth new hire for Nizi International in the past four months, following the recruitment of former MRI chief Mark Lowe as its head of base metals in June.

A slew of new hires represents Nizi’ s attempt to diversify away from the company’s refined-product focused portfolio. Nizi earlier recruited Richard Letters and Luis Dedios from Cliveden to join the company.

More new hires are expected to come at Nizi’s base metals and concentrates in Luxembourg and local offices, Berg said.
